Better Together

Mix and match different foods to get more nutrients in every tasty bite.

Runners know that fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are good for us because they contain nutrients that fuel our runs and repair our muscles. But many of us might not realize that while each of these foods is individually nutritious, when they're paired with a complementary counterpart, they can provide more bang with every bite.

"Nature put nutrients in foods to act in synergy with each other,"… Continue

How to Love your Mortgage

Lately I've been doing my best to keep the television off, and newspaper closed. With all the hype and drama about foreclosures on the rise and properties vacated left & right, I started to wonder....what about all the people who still have homes? How come they don't talk about that? How come they don't discuss all the millions of people who are actually still living in their homes and what they are doing to stay current on their mortgage payments. There definitely is hope & there's… Continue

How to Save Money by joining a Food Co-Op

When Sam Dodge and his partner Heather Paulson moved to New York City a year ago, one of their biggest shocks was the cost of food. In Seattle, Sam had worked on farms and at a farmers’ market, where he could trade food with other farmers. “It had been a while since I’d been shopping regularly on my own,” he says. But even compared to grocery store prices out west, he discovered, “New York is really expensive.”

These days, you don’t have to move to the Big Apple to be shocked by the… Continue

4 realistic ways to protect your financial freedom

You've made the decision to abandon the corporate world and are about to pull the trigger on your plans for financial freedom -- or maybe you're still in the dreaming stage. Either way, you're putting your finances in order, drawing up spending plans and realigning investments for your post-9-to-5 life.

Talc Use Linked to Increased Risk for Ovarian Cancer

Regular use of talc in the genital area was significantly associated with an increased risk for ovarian cancer in a new analysis reported in Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention. The researchers say that genital use of talc should be avoided.

This is not a new finding — the association between genital talc use and an increased risk for ovarian cancer has been reported previously, and was confirmed in a meta-analysis of 16 studies.

The latest findings come from an analysis of… Continue

The Truth About Diet Soda

We talk a lot about ''watching what we eat,'' but if you never gave a thought to what you ate and instead watched only what you drank, you could probably cut 450 calories a day out of your life. (Yes, nearly a pound of fat loss a week!) That's what a study from the University of North Carolina found. Americans today drink about 192 gallons of liquid a year—or about 2 liters a day. To put it into perspective, this is nearly twice as many calories as we did 30 years ago.

When… Continue

13 ways to save on prescriptions

You don't have to be uninsured to worry about the cost of prescription drugs.

Increasingly, employers are boosting co-payments and placing restrictions on what medicines are covered under company insurance plans. And though Medicare Part D has helped pay for millions of prescriptions, many seniors still struggle with the cost of their medications.

Yet people find ways to rein in the cost, and some pharmacies, drug companies and Web sites are helping their efforts. Here's… Continue

Erase Negative Self-Talk and Claim Back Your Mind

This week we’re going to cover something almost everyone struggles with every now and then: Negative Self-Talk.

What is negative self-talk, you ask. It’s that nagging voice in your head that pours you a negative cocktail of half-truths, poor logic and distortions of reality. It’s your mind interpreting events and circumstances (whether external or internal) through a lens of pessimism and self-loathing. Overall, it’s a big problem, and far too many people struggle with… Continue

The Heart of the Condor - a different Christmas story

At times we think we are separate and alone. We struggle to get free of the ancient prison walls around our hearts and of our sense of alienation from our Source. But we are not alone.

The Soul is a mighty bird flying into the sun, not a broken-winged sparrow. Spirit is living us, and when the time is right, Love manifests in astounding ways to show us the way back home. This is what happened with Alma.

She was born into great poverty in Peru, and yet she was the richest… Continue

What is aromatherapy & is it safe?

What is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy, or essential oils therapy, is using a plant's aroma-producing oils (essential oils) to treat disease. Essential oils are taken from a plant's flowers, leaves, stalks, bark, rind, or roots. The oils are mixed with another substance (such as oil, alcohol, or lotion) and then put on the skin, sprayed in the air, or inhaled. You can also massage the oils into the skin or pour them into bath water. Aromatherapy as used today originated in Europe and… Continue

PRECAUTION! = FDA Warns About Weight Loss Products

Agency says more than 2 dozen contain dangerous ingredients not listed on label.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned consumers Monday to avoid more than two dozen products marketed for weight loss because they contain undeclared ingredients that could pose serious health risks.

The products are sold in some retail stores and on the Internet and some claim to contain only "natural" or "herbal" ingredients. But the undeclared ingredients (not listed on labels) range… Continue
